In Canada, the population would be declining if it were not for a generous immigration policy. In addition, the immigrant population tends to have more children than those who have lived in Canada for a long time. One of the results... of immigration is that the face of Canada is changing. About 21% of all people living in Canada were not born there. In cities like Toronto (the most diverse city in the world) about 45% of the people are immigrants. In Vancouver, it is about 33%. Even Edmonton, a city of about 1 million, has over 75 different ethnic groups living there & offers schooling in a wide variety of languages through the public school system.
According to the UN Stats, Canada's population will grow from 2000/30,687,000 to 2050/44,414,000. Its median age in 2050 will be low 40s. Immigration is important economically only if it is youger people and high skill labor level to finance through tax base the long-term social welfare, entitlement, pension programs of Canada. My guess is that Canada, even with high immigration levels, will face major economic challenges in the next few decades, not unlike many of European nations. The key, again economically speaking, is that it is a productive immigrant population.
