India is the world's largest democracy and second most populous country emerged as a major power in the 1990s. It is militarily strong, has major cultural influence and a fast-growing and powerful economy. A nuclear-armed state, it carried out tests in the 1970s and again in the 1990s in defiance of world opinion. However, India is still tackling huge social, economic and environmental problems.

Bangladesh is one of the least developed nation in the world according to the United Nation. It is one of the world's most densely populated countries, with its people crammed into a delta of rivers that empties into the Bay of Bengal. Poverty is deep and widespread; almost half of the population live on less than one dollar a day. However, Bangladesh has reduced population growth and improved health and education. The least developed nation of Bangledesh became independent of Pakistan in 1971.

Islam became the state religion of Bangledesh in 1988. 90% of the population, around 140 million, of 165 million (2050/222 million) are Muslim, 9% are Buddhists, and only around .50% are Christian (around 1 million). There are also tens of thousands of Jesus-followers who have not left their officially Muslim identities. 4 - AFGHANISTAN (South Asia)

Population - 2000/20,536,000 - 2050/73,938,000 - grows by (23 nation in population)

Landlocked and mountainous, Afghanistan is one of the least developed nations in the world according to the United Nations. It has suffered from such chronic instability and conflict during its modern history that its economy and infrastructure are in ruins, and many of its people are refugees. Since the fall of the Taliban administration in 2001, adherents of the hard-line Islamic movement have re-grouped. It is now a resurgent force, particularly in the south and east, and the Afghan government has struggled to extend its authority beyond the capital and to forge national unity.

5 - SRI LANKA ISLAND (South Asia)

Population: 2000/18,767,000 - 2050/21,705,000 (71 nation in 2050 population)

The tropical island of Sri Lanka is located off the southern tip of India. It has been scarred by a long and bitter civil war arising out of ethnic tensions between the majority Sinhalese and the Tamil minority in the northeast. After more than 25 years of violence, the conflict appeared to be at an end - at least militarily - in May 2009, when government forces seized the last area controlled by Tamil Tiger rebels. There is a long-established Tamil minority in the north and east. The British also brought in Tamil labourers to work the coffee and tea plantations in the central highlands, making the island a major tea producer. But the majority Buddhist Sinhalese community resented what they saw as favouritism towards the mainly-Hindu Tamils under British administration.
