1 - NIGERIA (Sub-Saharan Africa, West Africa)

Population - 2000/124,842,000 - 2050/289,083,000 - grow m (5 nation in population)
Population Growth Rate - 2000/2.42 - 2050/1.01

After experiencing one military coup to another, Nigeria now has an elected leadership. But it faces the growing challenge of preventing Africa's most populous country from breaking apart along ethnic and religious lines. Political liberalisation ushered in by the return to civilian rule in 1999 has allowed militants from religious and ethnic groups to express their frustrations more freely, and with increasing violence.

Although it is difficult to come to an exact number, it is estimated that the church today now exceeds 100,000 (2011) primarily among Kbyle, Berbers, but it is also growing among Arabs. Some estimate 250,000 Christians in the country, including about 10,000 Roman Catholics and 150,000 to 200,000 evangelical Protestants (mainly Pentecostal), according to the Protestant Church of Algeria's leader. Some sources claim more than one million Christians in Algeria, most of them live in the Kabylie area where there are more than 70 underground churches. The Berbers, about 23% of the populaton has experienced a people movement of Jesus' followers. It is a very indigenous church. There are over 3,000 Algerian Christians in Europe today, with over 4 million Algerians living in Europe.

Ethiopia is Africa's oldest independent nation. Ethiopia is Africa's oldest independent country. Apart from a five-year occupation by Mussolini's Italy, it has never been colonised. But the nation is better known for its periodic droughts and famines, its long civil conflict and a border war with Eritrea. Ethiopia is one of Africa's poorest states. Almost two-thirds of its people are illiterate. The economy revolves around agriculture, which in turn relies on rainfall. The country is one of Africa's leading coffee producers.

3 - DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle Africa)

Population - 2000/50,829,000 - 2050/147,512,000 (10 nation in 2050 population)
Population Growth Rate - 2000/3.01 - 2050/1.26

A vast country with immense economic resources, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been at the centre of what could be termed Africa's world war. This has left it in the grip of a humanitarian crisis. The five-year conflict pitted government forces, supported by Angola, Namibia and Zimbabwe, against rebels backed by Uganda and Rwanda. Despite a peace deal and the formation of a transitional government in 2003, people in the east of the country remain in terror of marauding militia and the army. The war claimed an estimated three million lives, either as a direct result of fighting or because of disease and malnutrition. It has been called possibly the worst emergency to unfold in Africa in recent decades.

Population - 2000/34,131,000 - 2050/109,450,000 (17 nation in 2050 population)
One of the least developed/poorest nations in the world

Tanzania has been spared the internal strife that has blighted many African states. Though it remains one of the poorest countries in the world, with many of its people living below the World Bank poverty line, it has had some success in wooing donors and investors. Tanzania assumed its present form in 1964 after a merger between the mainland Tanganyika and the island of Zanzibar, which had become independent the previous year.

5 - UGANDA (Sub-Saharan Africa, East Africa)

Population - 2000/24,433,000 - 2050/91,271,000 (20 nation in 2050 population)
One of the least developed/poorest nations in the world

Uganda is a landlocked naiton in East Africa. Since the late 1980s Uganda has rebounded from the abyss of civil war and economic catastrophe to become relatively peaceful, stable and prosperous. But the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in the north remain blighted by one of Africa's most brutal rebellions. In the 1970s and 1980s Uganda was notorious for its human rights abuses, first during the military dictatorship of Idi Amin from 1971-79 and then after the return to power of Milton Obote, who had been ousted by Amin.

What that means is that by the middle of the century, Uganda could have a population somewhere around 60-70 million, and a fair bet is that about three-quarters of those will be Christian. Uganda by that point, in terms of absolute numbers, will be one of the most significant Christian countries in the world. (Jenkins)

Population: 2000/11,031,000 - 2050/58,216,000 (31 nation in 2050 population)
One of the least developed/poorest nations in the world

A vast landlocked, arid nation on the edge of the Sahara desert, Niger endured austere military rule for much of its post-independencnate history and is rated by the UN as one of the world's least-developed nations. The drought-prone country sometimes struggles to feed its people. Its main export, uranium, is prone to price fluctuations and agriculture is threatened by the encroaching desert. Niger is bargaining on oil exploration and gold mining to boost its fortunes.

Cote D'Voire has slipped into the kind of internal strife that has plagued many African countries. An armed rebellion in 2002 split the nation in two. Since then, peace deals have alternated with renewed violence as the country has slowly edged its way towards a political resolution of the conflict. Although the fighting has stopped, Ivory Coast is tense and divided. French and UN peacekeepers patrolled the buffer zone which separated the north, held by rebels known as the New Forces, and the government-controlled south.

Landlocked Rwanda is one of the least developed nations in the world according to the United Nations. Between April and June 1994, an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed in the space of 100 days. Most of the dead were Tutsis - and most of those who perpetrated the violence were Hutus. Even for a country with such a turbulent history as Rwanda, the scale and speed of the slaughter left its people reeling. The genocide was sparked by the death of the Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down above Kigali airport on 6 April 1994. A French judge has blamed current Rwandan President, Paul Kagame - at the time the leader of a Tutsi rebel group - and some of his close associates for carrying out the rocket attack. Mr Kagame vehemently denies this and says it was the work of Hutu extremists, in order to provide a pretext to carry out their well-laid plans to exterminate the Tutsi community. Whoever was responsible, within hours a campaign of violence spread from the capital throughout the country, and did not subside until three months later. But the death of the president was by no means the only cause of Africa's largest genocide in modern times.

Today, approximately 90% of the population of 4 million are categorized as Christian (around 3.4 million), with a annual growth rate of 2%. Equatorial Guinea is a small country off West Africa which has recently struck oil and which is now being cited as a textbook case of the resource curse - or the paradox of plenty. Since the mid 1990s the former Spanish colony has become one of sub-Sahara's biggest oil producers and in 2004 was said to have the world's fastest-growing economy. However, few people have benefited from the oil riches and the country ranks near the bottom of the UN human development index. The UN says that less than half the population has access to clean drinking water and that 20 percent of children die before reaching five.
